New Anthology Of Aboriginal Country Music

Rebecca Varidel
26th Nov 2018

Inspired by the CD and book set released by journalist Clinton Walker in 2000 featuring the same name, Buried Country is a stunning collection of songs recorded by Indigenous Australian artists between 1958 and 2011, with all tracks being remastered and pressed on vinyl for the first time.

Compiled by Darren Hanlon who spent over 6 months travelling across the country talking to the artists, this release comes with a 36 page full-colour booklet filled with photos, artworks, interviews and stories of and by these amazing musicians.

Among the unearthed recordings are a cassette demo protest song by The Kooriers that had been submitted to a Melbourne label in the 70's and gone unnoticed since then – along with a 1958 recording from a Jimmy Little 45" single where only 2 copies are known to exist.

The front cover is artwork is painted by award winning artist Vincent Namatjira (Great Grandson of Albert Namatjira) currently living in the APY lands, and the image is of his father-in-law fellow artist and stockman Mr Kunmanara (Jimmy) Pompey.

The back cover is painted by Mr Pompey himself who sadly passed away this past May just before he was able to see the finished product for himself. A huge music fan who grew up singing country songs and listening to old LPs, Mr Pompey was extremely proud to have his art featured on this release.
