Our Top 3 Picks for the IGTV Awards for People’s Choice

Tuesday 11 June marked the celebration of Instagram’s inaugural IGTV Film Festival in collaboration with VICE and Sydney Film Festival with the winners announced. All entries are open to the public until Sunday 16th June at Lower Town Hall where you can vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Entrants were asked to create a short film (maximum 10 minutes) on the future of Australia. Instagram received more than 100 entries leaving the interpretation of their brief open with 5 finalists selected.

Throughout the evening, a pop-up screening room with headsets and beanbags was set up for guests to enjoy the stories of the five contenders vying for the winning title:

- Cueki Croci took us to a world where Daniel wasn’t sure whether to propose to his girlfriend and asked his phoned for advice

- Grace Tan takes us to a future where a virus has destroyed everyone’s ability to speak or hear online and the only method of communication that has emerged uses body movement.

- Kerrod Cooper presents abstract imagery in adapting the Greek mythology of Narcissus into modern day Australia posing the question of self in its reality and perceived digital form.

A wide variety of concepts and diverse casting and location shoots captured in crisp professional pieces of work showed the talent and intelligence that is apparent in our filmmakers of tomorrow.

The 2019 IGTV Film Festival was won by Sara Glaoua for her film The Gift, following a young Ethiopian refugee living in Tasmania with dreams of becoming a professional soccer player. Watch it on Instagram here.
