News of the week is that Chippendale bar Freda’s has just been approved to trade until 4am on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as 2am the rest of the week including Sunday.

“We have seen Sydney’s nightlife go through a sad and painful decline over the last 6 years. However, this is an important turning point in Sydney reaching its immense potential as a late-night city. We believe that safe, diverse, intelligent, and cultured spaces for like-minded people to connect and create are an essential part of a city’s heartbeat. We are grateful that both City of Sydney, and ILGR have supported our application for extended trade, and we can further our commitment to showcasing the incredible arts, culture and music the city has to offer”  says David Abram, owner of Freda’s.

Established in 2011 through City of Sydney’s Small Bar Legislation, Freda’s has become an essential part of the cultural fabric of the city, and is a much-loved venue showcasing both emerging and established artists, musicians and performers in an intimate setting. A second room called Down Under was established in Freda’s basement in 2017 that provides an essential space for young artists to showcase their works.

Freda’s will be taking part in Vivid Music for a 5th year commencing 24May as part of the X|Cellerate program supported by City of Sydney and Destination NSW including a headline show by New York based DJ Tim Sweeney, who’ll be celebrating 20 years of his seminal dance music show Beats in Space. As well as shows featuring Japans AZ, owner of famed record store Revelation Time, who’ll be playing alongside Noise in My Head, recent Boiler Room alumni Toni Yotzi, Melbourne disco legends Wax’o Paradiso, and much more.

While the extended hours are effective immediately, there will be an official launch party to celebrate next Friday 10 May.
