Tempus Sun EP Launch at Brighton Up Bar

The Brighton Up Bar is a great little venue smack bang in the middle of Oxford Street and it’s where I found myself on Saturday night, to watch Tempus Sun launch their self titled EP.

As I sat, listening to the dulcet tones of Phil Collins over the sound system, Reschs in hand, it dawned on me just how small the red curtain lined stage was - how the hell were the Melbourne six piece band going to fit there!?

A small but jovial crowd had turned up for first act Mister Mystic. The Sydney four-piece came on playing a mix of funky pop tunes with some nice key/synth sounds. They went from lounge style keys with falsetto vocals, to Beatles-era psychedelics and staccato bass. Although I think they’re still finding their feet as they’ve only formed earlier this year.

During the interval to the next act, Phil Collins came back on the PA, I found myself thinking who chooses the incidental music at venues?

Then Marvell Music burst onto the stage. The Sydney five piece were tight and energetic, and they had a grittier story to tell. The two vocalists gave a rollicking performance with a swagger and rock bravado, and managed to bring a big sound to such a small venue (and even smaller stage). I really enjoyed the track I think was called "Psychocandy," but it was their cover of Led Zepplin’s "Whole Lotta Love" that swept the room up and got them singing along.

The crowd had filled out by this stage, Phil is back on the PA, and I heard a voice behind me ask “Is that Phil Collins”? In my mind I shouted “Shut it Phil, you are killing the vibe with your smooth easy listening tones!”

Up next were Tempus Sun, surprisingly they all fit up there. Tempus Sun have two excellent vocalists who did a great job harmonising and contrasting vocals - at times soaring along together and then having a melodic tug of war. Again they had a huge sound, one that could have easily been suited to a much larger venue. The first guitar strings of their track "Owls" were met by shrieks of excitement from the crowd. It was a great performance of uplifting melodies, at times symbiotic then ferocious. An amazing act who I’m sure have a bright future ahead.

Tempus Sun's self-titled debut EP was released on Friday 25th August. They are currently touring the east coast of Australia.
