Jazz songstress Emma Pask has been playing the Australian music scene since her talent was spotted as a teenager by James Morrison on a school visit. Fast forward to the present, she's made quite a name for herself, and is still a regular of the Sydney jazz scene.

Sydney Scoop caught Pask and that damn impressive voice of hers at Marrickville's cozy Camelot Lounge, where she was joined by piano legend Kevin Hunt for a classy jazz evening, as part of Vivid Sydney's music lineup.

Gloriously at home on the stage, Pask and Hunt played us through a diverse representation of their jazz prowess, comprising reworked classics, standards, Latin rhythms and the inevitable improv jams throughout.

The stage banter between the duo extended playfully into the music, through improvised solos that mimicked their lighthearted conversation while also displaying impressive command of the genre.

Black Hole Sun was an emotive tribute to Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, who recently passed away. It was beautiful, and there was definitely a tear or few shed around the room.

Other highlights included The Beatles ' Here, There and Everywhere, plus funky upbeat numbers Smack Dab in the Middle and Hard Hearted Hannah (The Vamp of Savannah).

Pask's deft lyrical agility was on show in Crickets Sing for Anamaria, the English version of an impressive Brazilian number by Marcos Valle that celebrates both the chaos of big families and verbosity... That's one you'll have to hear to understand.

Albums Some Other Spring and Cosita Divina are out now.

Emma Pask is about to play the Ascona jazz festival in Switzerland, check out her website for upcoming local shows after she returns.
