Jurassic World

The original Jurassic Park (1993) was a front-runner in the industry and idolised by every kid in the 90’s. The feature film successfully experimented with Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), creating life-like dinosaurs for the big screen. It was a milestone film and grossed $900 million worldwide at the Box Office, winning over 20 awards for its technical achievements. Fast-forward 22 years, two sequels and major technological advances, we now arrive at Jurassic World.

The Jurassic World theme park sits on the island of Isla Nublar, where a dinosaur park has functioned for 10 years (as originally envisioned by John Hammond in Jurassic Park). With pressure from head office to attract more visitors, the polished business-driven Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) leads a group of scientists to create a dinosaur hybrid, the Indominus Rex. Claire pulls up to a trailer on the edge of the theme park where we meet the muscle-popping dinosaur-whisperer Owen (Chris Pratt). Together these two track the Indominus Rex that eventually escapes, wreaking havoc on the theme park.

The plot also follows the story of Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins), the nephews of Claire, who adventure too far and get caught in the sights of the Indominus Rex and have to escape. They provide the family backstory for this science fiction based action film. The ‘bad guy’ Vic (Vincent D'Onofrio) plays a leading role as the head of security at InGen, the science company that plans to exploit the Velociraptors at the park.

The success of the latest Jurassic installment hinges on the newest animation technology, where the CGI is better than ever before and the dinosaurs are brought to life in 3D and IMAX Theatres. The excellent graphics will immerse you in the world of the dinosaurs just like you did in 1993, but better! The corny and cliché dialogue between Claire and Owen will have you laughing with just the right amount of funny.

In a nod to the past, Jurassic World references the original many times including; the Jurassic Park entry gate, ruins from the park, the science company InGen, Mr. DNA, as well as an original Jurassic Park t-shirt worn by Lowery (Jake Johnson).

For those left wondering about the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park, you need not worry, she has her moment in Jurassic World and you will not be left unsatisfied.

All that needs to be said about this film is that combining sexual tension, a family backstory, a bad guy and dinosaurs can only lead to a smash hit. It may be totally predictable but is equally excellent and worth every penny.

Thank you Steven Spielberg.

Jurassic World is in cinemas now.
