Never have I listened to an entire EP of remixes before, I’ve certainly considered it, but the high chance of mundanity turned me off! In saying that the 8 different versions of ODEZA’s ‘Across the Room’ is far from said mundanity, it plunges the listener into a diverse genre-dipping voyage with Tycho, Yung Heat, AbJo, Groove Armada and Durante all injecting their own juices into the mix.
Tycho’s remix starts the EP off, and I’ll be honest it’s not really my flavor, but it certainly holds up as the most vocal track of the lot. Yung Heat’s take on things is much more soulful and rhythmic with dreamy synths accompanying a breakbeat reminiscent of an early 2000s RnB chart topper. The hardest track to define genre-wise is next; AbJo has elements of trip hop but also very trappy at times I’m not quite sure how I felt about it, maybe that’s a good thing? But I can say with certainty that loud crashing symbols, a heavy droning bass and echoing voices are the holy trinity of a 90s EDM anthem and Groove Armada really bring their powerful flare to the original track. The extended mix is brilliant as the above holy trinity draws out the breakdowns, building the energy of the track to climax far, far stronger and with a distinctively British sound.
Although my favorite remix has to be Durante’s extend mix, I’m a massive fan of downtempo music with a solid, thumping kick drum. It’s an exotic remix for sure, the occasional animal noises and water soundbites takes my mind to an imagined scene where I’m being rowed down the amazon in a hollowed-out tree trunk canoe. Two dark muscular chiefs behind me with bones through their noses and tribal scarring down their arms generate the force with paddles to glide the canoe down-stream. On either side of the bank are tribespeople with animal skin drums and wooden tap sticks making up the meat of this incredible remix.
