Vera Blue (Celia Pavey) is a Sydney based singer-songwriter who placed third in the 2013 season of the television show The Voice. Before she heads off to play at Splendour in the Grass later this month, we were lucky enough to score an invite to Paddington Town Hall - with a crowd of about 500 people - for the launch of her new album Perennial.

We made our way upstairs to the large Stapleton Hall, an impressive historical space with large white columns, high ceiling, and polished floorboards. Once inside we found ourselves greeted by wait staff with drinks, and canapes - gotta love a good launch event!

A sizeable stage had been erected with an illuminated backdrop spelling out Vera Blue. After a short sound check Vera hit the stage, joined by her band which included two members of I Know Leopard, one on keys and the other as a backing vocalist. Her sister was also another of her backup singers.

Vera Blue put on a solid performance which was a joy to watch, from the stand up drums that lit up on impact, to hearing her soaring vocals. She was obviously having a good time and the crowd were swaying along to her music. Her voice bounced around the wonderful acoustics of the venue.

It’s easy to see why there’s a lot of interest in her as a performer as she’s comparable to such powerful female performers as Florence Welch and Lana Del Rey.

Perennial is out on CD, vinyl, and digital formats on Friday July 21st. Below, watch the video for the album single "Mended."
