While this outstanding food at The Welcome Hotel from Chef Daniel Mulligan leans to his Italian years at Pilu At Freshwater, Mulligan has found his own feet, and stands firmly. The Ajò menu is well sized with half a dozen choices of starters or mains, such as the stunning Swordfish belly, crusted with Pilu bottarga, pickled beetroots, grapefruit puree ($21). With the dearest main at only thirty five bucks, this is not only some of the best food in Sydney, but right up there with best value. Then, there are the desserts, and the cheeses. And with all of that you also get bloody good damn service too, up there with fine dining, but with a little pub softening as accent. Set inside The Welcome Hotel, Ajò boasts two rooms - including a covered courtyard - with spacious place settings, an excellent wine list with great choices by the glass or carafe, and access to the daily tap craft beer list of the pub. There's everything to love, and no reason to miss out. Go!
