The photographic exhibition One Life captures the lives and experiences of 6 women who have been incarcerated in Australia’s prisons for a variety of crimes. Its explores how they felt about their crime 1 minute before their release back into the community, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week and a year afterwards. There are 12 participants – 6 ex-prisoners and 6 advocates.

The exhibition is multi-media with video and audio interviews which are complemented by the stories from 6 advocates who imprisoned or dealt with these women while they experiences the justice and prison system.

One Life provides an insight into the violence and discrimination that women who are ex-prisoner women can encounter on their road to rebuilding their lives after. These women are mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and friends. They’re not just labelled by the occurrence that led them into prison, nor should they forever be defined by their experience within our justice system. At the end of the day, prisoners don’t stay in prison. Once released, they could become your neighbours, work colleagues and perhaps, even your friend. So why not take this opportunity to get to know them a little better.
