Following an historic Eurovision win that has presented Portuguese music to a bigger international audience than ever, critically acclaimed Portuguese-born ‘fadista’, Mafalda Arnauth will bring her hauntingly beautiful voice and captivating music to Australia for the first time on Sunday 11 June 2017, as part of the Portugal Day celebrations to be held at the Sydney Portugal Community Club, in Marrickville.

Releasing her first album in 1999, Mafalda’s successful career has seen her perform traditional Portuguese Fado music at some of Europe’s finest concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall in London and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Live in concert for one night only, Mafalda will be accompanied by Francisco Pereira on the Portuguese guitar and supported by Ramon Maschio.

Dating back to the 1820’s, Fado music was put on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011 and is characterised by mournful tunes and lyrics, full of emotion and melancholia.

Speaking after the release of her third album in 2003, Mafalda said that her music “leaves fatality, disgrace and nostalgia behind. Hope is fed on sadness; inspiration on suffering; strength and courage on difficulties.”
