The 2017 SmartFone Flick Fest will screen 13 top local and international short films made exclusively on a smart phone, and four virtual reality films shot at a 360 degree angle, on Thursday, 24 August at the Chauvel Cinema Paddington.
The annual short film festival now in its third year will screen 10 short films all to compete for the Festival’s Best Film Award, two Kids Flick Picks, and four finalists for the inaugural SF360 Award - sharing a bumper prize package worth over $10,000. There will also be the Founders Pick Flick, celebrating local Sydney filmmakers’ contribution to the Festival.
For the first time the winner of this year's Festival will also have their film screened at the Global Mobile Film Awards in San Diego, April 2018.
“Across the globe filmmaking on smartphones continues to explode, creating a very unique and raw set of original films and filmmakers,” said SmartFone Flick Fest Co-Director and Founder Ali Crew. “There’s colour, life, loads of laughs, and a myriad of fascinating perspectives in this this year’s SmartFone Flick Fest.” She said. Australian actress Nicole da Silva, best known for her roles in Wentworth and Doctor Doctor, has come on board in 2017 as Festival ambassador.
Nicole is thrilled to be a part of SF3 in 2017 and is already impressed by the quality of filmmaking entered into the competition. “From Interview with a Cocaine Merchant, a look at the dangerous and devastating world of illegal drug trading by Brisbane based filmmaker James Hyams, to a charming documentary about Melbourne’s Space Van Man from Swinburne University film students Anita Agathangelou, Brenton Gardiner, Kara Haarburger, John Lee, Corey Martin and Max Schleser, these ten finalist films truly are the best examples of smart phone filmmaking,” she said.
“I hope film lovers will come and see this exciting and fresh selection of mobile-made films.”
