Sydney Film Festival: Una

@ Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace

$17 - $19.90 + bf

Una is as a screenplay adapted by David Harrower from his play Blackbird and directed by Benedictine Andrews. It is as conflicted as it is bold, taking you into the heart of a sexually beguiled relationship, between a now of age Una (Rooney Mara) and her long lost love and child abuser Ray (Ben Mendelsohn). Una comes seeking answers that no one else can give; she enters back into a nihilistic relationship that is “defined by being closed off from the rest of the world” (Benedictine).

Mara (who also appears at SFF this year in A Ghost Story and Song to Song) and Mendelsohn (who can be seen in a restored version of The Year My Voice Broke at SFF) both deliver extraordinary, nuanced and extremely brave performances. Daringly taking on taboos, Andrews handles this sensitive material with precision. Una is a film that will stay with you for a long time.
