It’s going to be a seafood spectacle at Sydney Fish Market this Christmas with retailers getting ready for the annual 36-Hour Seafood Marathon. More than 100,000 visitors are expected to visit Sydney Fish Market during the marathon to source fresh seafood for their Christmas festivities.

Each year, the Christmas season proves to be the busiest time for Sydney Fish Market as Aussies and holidaymakers embrace the hot summer weather and stock up on tonnes of fresh produce over the two days immediately prior to Christmas Day.

With extended trading hours in place, there is plenty of time for everyone to drop in and pick up goodies for their Christmas seafood feast. The marathon kicks off at 5:00am on Saturday, 23 December, with retailers open all the way through to 5:00pm on Sunday, 24 December.

Sydney Fish Market general manager, Bryan Skepper, says, “The 36-Hour Seafood Marathon is a long-standing tradition and one of our favourite events on the calendar. Visitors can expect a vibrant and exciting atmosphere throughout the entire event. It is a great opportunity for everyone to load up on Christmas supplies and pick up some last minute gifts from Sydney Seafood School for the seafood enthusiasts in your life”.

Where the city meets the sea, Sydney Fish Market is unbeatable on location and offers a plethora of seafood options housed in the sites’ six wet fish retailers as well as restaurants and cafés.

Shoppers can expect the largest range of fresh seafood sourced from all over Australia, with over 50% of that supplied from New South Wales. According to Deloitte research conducted earlier this year, 86% of seafood sourced from New South Wales was from regional areas, and worth more than $53 million in 2015/16*.

More than just shopping for seafood, visitors can collect a Christmas turkey or from the butcher; source advice on the best wines and beer for pairing with their meal from the bottle shop; or pick up fresh bread from the bakery. No Christmas feast would be complete without a spread of cold meats, olives and cheeses which are all available from the on-site deli; fresh fruit and vegetables can be picked up from the greengrocer.

Those seeking inspiration for their Christmas menu can get practising with a range of recipes developed by Sydney Seafood School. Available here.

There will be a special appearance from Santa on Saturday 23rd from 11am – 1pm and on Sunday 24th from 10am - midday, delivering a burst of Christmas spirit to the 36-Hour Seafood Marathon.
