Sydney Fringe: Opus by Twisted Element

@ PACT centre for emerging artists Inc

$39 + bf

After a very popular premiere, Opus is back by high demand, completely reworked for the incredible PACT Theatre in Erskineville for three nights only at Sydney Fringe Festival, 28-30th September.

No longer is live theatre performance limited to the confines of an actual theatre, where you have to sit uncomfortably in a chair, not make a sound and wonder if you understand what’s happening before you.

Twisted Element, a dance theatre company from Sydney, has launched its first immersive, interactive dance experience, inspired by the desire to give Sydney an injection of what it sorely needs.

‘Opus’ Twisted Element’s bizarre and dazzling experiential dance production premiered in June of this year at Duti Studios, a converted warehouse space in Newtown. Audiences experienced first- hand, immersive dance theatre designed around the ever-entwining relationship between human and machine, organic and synthetic, real and unreal. Cyborg characters adorned in lights, vacuous space age barbies and combat robots, immerse you into a futuristic world full of surrealism, hilarious metaphors and hypnotic beauty as the dancers looped in and out of the audience, coaxing them to become part of the experience, all the while surprising them continuously with redirection of attention and theme.

The key factor being unpredictability, creating a sense of danger and excitement, all the while knowing you are completely safe.

The company has presented a number of works in Sydney theatres between 2010-2014, with building success as an independent dance company, recognised for its unique and thought- provoking style and strong visual aesthetic.
While Director, Angela Hamilton recently took a break from Twisted Element to work overseas, she learned of the hugely growing popularity and development of immersive theatre in cities like London and New York, having being inspired by companies such as Fuerza Bruta, Punchdrunk and London’s ‘Alice’s Adventures Underground’.

“People aren’t excited by stage and audience type experiences anymore, they want to be involved, interact and feel exhilarated and alive. With today’s digital age, people are craving that tactile experience with others. And this is why immersive theatre is exciting and progressive, its giving people something that is becoming less evident in our lives; real life experience, engaging connection and being pushed out of our comfort zone.”

‘Opus’ is not just a performance but an unforgettable experience, so rare, especially in Sydney. This is an opportunity to shatter your preconceptions of dance in the theatre and be a part of a movement.
