Sydney Fringe: Sunday in the Park with George

$22 + bf

Inspired by George Seurat’s magnificent painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s soaring musical is itself an artistic masterpiece. One of the most acclaimed musicals of our time, it won a Pulitzer Prize for its deeply insightful and highly personal examination of life through art and the artist.

Act I follows George and the immense struggle in finding one’s artistic voice. In doing so, George becomes more and more distant from the one woman who truly sees him for who he really is. Act II moves forward one hundred years and tells the story of George’s descendant, himself a struggling artist and how he, too, grapples with issues of artistic ingenuity, and a public who just doesn’t understand. Sunday in the Park with George is an experiment in form and aesthetic, dictated by questions concerning art, children, and one’s legacy.

This 2017 Sydney Fringe production comes from company Little Triangle, and is presented at Marrickville's Depot Theatre.
