“A FEW YEARS BACK I GOT IN A BIT OF TROUBLE WHEN I SAID I THOUGHT THE SOUTHERN CROSS WAS BECOMING THE NEW SWASTIKA…” The Southern Cross is the most famous constellation in the southern hemisphere and also one of the most ubiquitous tattoos in the southern hemisphere. With We Don’t Need a Map, Cannes-winning director Warwick Thornton (Sweet Country, Samson & Delilah) explores the spiritual and practical importance of the constellation to Indigenous Australians through a series of intimate, through-provoking interviews with disparate communities, Indigenous Elders and cultural figures, as well as poking into the Southern Cross’ appropriation since colonisation to its current links to ugly notions of Australian nationalism. This is no boring history lesson, it’s a fiery and often funny take on our cultural and political landscape by one of Australia’s best and most provocative filmmakers. We Don’t Need a Map premiered as the Opening Night film of the 2017 Sydney Film Festival.
