70's Flashback Tie Dye

With the big news film opening of Bohemian Rhapsody this week, expect to be getting your 70's dose in other fashion ways too.

NEWSFLASH: Tie Dye is back, and in a BIG WAY!

From Dior to Stella McCartney, from Prada to Michael Kors, and that's just for starters, and for the women.

Men's Spring 2019 fashion is in on the tie dye revival too. And again there is a long list from Comme des Garçons Homme Plus to Louis Vuitton and Issey Miyake. Then Jil Sander extends it to Men's oversized knitwear.

CHEAT SHEET: Want to know how to tie dye for yourself?

You can do all sorts of things with some dye colours, a garment (op shop is good) and some elastic bands.

While some sites like Tie Die Your Summer recommend cold dye and direct applicaton, experience at this end prefers the hot dye method. Use a huge old pot (again from the op shop because then it won't be much good for cooking food) for stove top hot dyeing. You can dye in multiple layers of colours just start with the lightest first. Tightly bind the clothing item or accessory (think fabric bag as an example) randomly with elastic bands before dyeing. The elastic band stops the colour from penetrating.

And for reverse tie dye, you can take a black shirt and tie dye with bleach! Good for achieving the Issey Miyake black and white Summer 2019 look.

Tie dye is actually pretty easy and you can get as creative and inspired as you so desire.

For other 70's fashion inspiration think crochet vests hats and bags, large brimmed floppy hats, cheesecloth smocks and platform shoes.
