“Over 90% of what the community sends to landfill can be reused and resold, and by saving it from landfill you’re helping the less fortunate, while getting an eco-chic look for less."

Eco-stylist, TV fashion commentator and ambassador for Salvos Stores Faye De Lanty says the lifecycle of a garment in Australia has been reduced almost to a 'single wear' with Australians purchasing over 20kg of new clothing each on average per year.

“When you donate an item to a Salvos Store, it’s just the beginning of its repurposed lifecycle, rather than the end. Your old pair of jeans or lived in leather biker jacket gets a new start rather than being destined for the bin. We restyle them in store, reinvent them with customization and sometimes they’ll end up in a fashion parade or featured on the tele."

National Op Shop Week 2017 is set to start on Monday August 28th and to celebrate Salvos Stores have teamed up with eco-stylist Faye de Lanty and author of Wardrobe Crisis Clare Press.

Salvos Curated – a three-day exhibition, concept store and upcycling workshop at Paddington’s Comber Studios commences from August 31st.

Register through this >> Eventbrite link << as spaces are limited. Salvos Curated will see more than 2,000 garments up for sale each day, hand-picked from Salvos Stores by De Lanty and Press, along with one-off donated items up for auction from prominent Australian designers, celebrities and fashion editors. The first list of designers and celebrities donating items for sale include Sally Obermeder, Bianca Spender, Dion Lee, Ginger & Smart, Bec & Bridge, MacGraw, & Gary Bigeni. All profits from the event will go to The Salvation Army to assist in funding social programs and support those less fortunate.

Along with racks of curated clothing for sale, there’ll be a DIY room with upcycling and mending workshops. Think tips and hacks on how to mend stuff, patch your jeans and customise a denim jacket, cool ways to turn a humdrum old T-shirt into something fashionable, and more.

To kick off National Op Shop Week 2017, Salvos is also offering 50% off everything (excluding new items) on Monday, 28th August in all stores across NSW, QLD and ACT, and will be running two free upcycling workshops at the Tempe and Seven Hills stores in Sydney with De Lanty, along with a nationwide competition through Facebook where the public can enter to become the best ‘Style Revivalist’ in their state.
