Bhoomi Indian Restaurant Glebe

There has been some time between visits to the beautiful old sandstone address of 134 Glebe Point Road. But we're back there chowing down, and this time it's Indian.

In a remarkable and stunning makeover that takes the exquisite beauty and old charm as the restaurant sandstone structural foundations, it is delightful to see Bhoomi use the warmth and charm of metal and wooden Indian adornments offset by contemporary purple neon light videos, to uplift the long underground area. Partitions make the restaurant dining spaces both cosy and intimate for couples, to big long tables for large groups, and there is also an intimate small room just perfect for private dining. There are a number of bar options from stools to vintage leather couches that make it also easy to settle in for the night just for a beverage or two.

Next mention goes to the inviting and professional service. And the floor all seemed most legitimately enthusiastic about the offerings.

So how's the food? As you might expect at an Indian Restaurant, Bhoomi offers both a la carte menu for you to mix and match your choice of courses, or as we selected there are two banquet options. We choose the more luscious Taste of Bhoomi ($85 per person):

To Begin
Holi Pappadums Smoked Salmon Mousse
Kingfish Ceviche Pani Puri
Lamb Vindaloo Mini Masala Dosa
Scallop Papdi With Onion, Capers and Chilli
Tamarind Rasam Shot
Tri-daali Betel Leaf Salad

Mains
Sri Lankan White Fish Curry
OR
Braised Beef Ribs
OR
Tandoori Lamb Rack

To Finish
Bhoomi Dessert Platter

Served plated as individual portions, the food at Bhoomi is delightful and delicious, both traditional in recipe and flavours yet presented in an elegant and contemporary presentation.

Starting with the trio of pappadum strips (the saffron was our favourite) we grazed our way through finger food that made us feel like we were at a Royal reception, so refined. Between the four courses of starters and betel leaf salad before we moved onto the main came a refresher Ramarind Rasam Shot. I likened it to the French sorbet that used to separate the meal, but thinking of the different climate of India, the spicy shot seemed a more appropriate hyphen in the meal. We sampled two of the three main courses, but even then it was hard to choose, as we really love the traditional Sri Lankan White Fish Curry. It was Braised Beef Ribs and Tandoori Lamb Rack that we settle on, though. Both were filling as well as yummy so bring your appetites.

Tasty? Definitely. Elegant? Yes most certainly. Get this. The whimsy of purple carried through even to the edible pansy dosa garnish. Very sexy.

With a sweet tooth at our table, we agreed to add an extra dessert, the house made Coconut Jaggery Hoppers with tropical fruit salsa, to the bought in dessert platter. Wise extra for flavour but boy were we full to the brim.

On the beverage side, we sampled some spicy cocktails and also enjoyed wine by the glass.

With all its a la carte options Hot Starts $12 Masala Potato Crispy Mini Dosa Crepes and $28.50 Sri Lankan Kakuluwo (Crabmeat) Hoppers through Jaffna Goat Curry (slow cooked goat, roasted spices, onions and coconut cream) or vegetarian plates such as $26.50 Palak Paneer Gnocchi (Indian cottage cheese, spinach puree, fried chilli) we feel this has it all. Tick the boxes on design, service, food and price. Yes, it's not a cheap and cheerful, but Bhoomi has every day eating prices with the elegance you deserve. Highly recommended.

This week Bhoomi has also announced the Afternoon Curry Club, an exclusive lunch membership with many benefits.
