The Espresso Martini was first created in 1984 by Dick Bradsell as a peculiar request from a British top model in his London bar. Tia Maria was actually the original coffee liquor he used in the Espresso Martini, now the 7th best selling cocktail globally, regarded by many as the coffee cocktail of Australia.

Tia Maria dates back to the mid-17th century when a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat fleeing the turmoil colonial war arrived on the island of Jamaica. Her maid saved one family treasure, a small jewellery box with black pearl earrings and an ancient manuscript with the recipe for a mysterious liqueur. The recipe lay dormant for many years before being rediscovered in the 1940s by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who began to produce and market it. The recipe was named after the courageous woman and Tia Maria was born.
