If you have ever dreamed of a unique adults only getaway in Sydney, minus the hassle of actually getting away, then jump on a ferry and head over to Cockatoo Island. Steeped in heritage as a former convict prison and shipping yard, it is now the home of a sensory playground for the next 6 months.

Conceived by duo Anatoly “Toly” Mezhov and Irene Polo a pop up oasis has been created on Bolt Wharf comprising of beautifully converted shipping container accommodation, a Latin American restaurant, bar, urban farm, and an event space.

The duo bring across many of the elements from their previous project, The Mantle, an activity hub of restaurants, bars and collaborative work spaces housed in a historic warehouse in Fremantle, West Australia.

Don Tapa, the restaurant, is also a WA export. Fusing South American cuisine with traditional Australian produce, the onsite urban farm will provide many of the indigenous ingredients. The majority of the dishes are a share plate format, and a group set menu ($60p/p) will also be on offer.

Curated by Alex Retief of the Urban Winery, the wine selection showcase regions of NSW which are still relatively unknown. Included in the round up of beverages are inner west favourites Young Henry’s with some of their iconic brews, and Archie Rose Distillery will feature a selection of boutique spirits.

The luxury accommodation on site is a boutique hotel situated metres from the waters edge with uninterrupted sweeping views. The gorgeous suites suitable for couples have been cleverly crafted out of repurposed shipping containers. Includes in the amenities are a queen-sized bed, air con, an exterior deck with lounge furniture, access to the Don Tapa Restaurant, room service and a container plunge pool. Rates start from $305 Monday through Thursday and $385 per night Friday & Saturday with a minimum two nights stay.

After a brief chat to Toly, I came away with the impression that a lot of consideration was given to the island and its unique cultural heritage, while they were creating a space for guests to enjoy great food, innovative farming, and explore the area. Visitors can either eat at the restaurant, enjoy a drink, or they can choose to add on the accommodation. Contained will also be home to a series of events throughout February and March
