Gazebo Kings Cross

In the '60s the magnificent circular tower of the Gazebo Hotel Elizabeth Bay was the playground of the rich and famous. You can relive that glamorous era today, in the restaurant at the base. Late last year, the Gazebo restaurant and bar was renovated to evoke that time. Now, the ivories in the bar are tinkled every Wednesday night. But, you can order a martini on any night. Or grab a bite to eat from the menu by Jason Dean.

His food is completely contemporary and although today we hear 'meant for sharing' spruiked all too often, this is one of the best lounge and graze examples around town today.

Beetroot crisps, Chantilly goats curd, balsamic ($6.50) are a must have. Perfect as bar munchies. Perfect as a starter for a bigger meal. Worth a visit to The Cross, just for these adorable morsels. So. We're off to a terrific start.

The must have snack is luscious finger food: Seared beef tartare, shiitake emulsions, roasted kale, peppered radish ($18). Innovative yet classic, bite size yet filling, tasty and tender. There are also oysters and olives, and a refreshing Cucumber cured kingfish - smoked oyster dressing, apple, lime ($19) listed.

Plates include five wood fired selections from pizzetta, to Serrano Jamon flatbread, tiger prawns, eggplant and spiced lamb dishes.

And there's bigger shares for the meat and seafood lovers. '60s reminiscing (well kinda sorta) in a luscious Smoked Chicken Terrine - celery, roasted grape, charred bread ($19) is all win. And, nod nod, good for sharing. Of course, you can be greedy, and order the plate, just for yourself.

So good. So are the other plates. Try yumbo Glazed pork - carrot, coriander, sweet & sour turnips ($27) or succulent Duck breast - beetroot, smoked almond, salted honeycomb ($28) with its innovative and interest accoutrements. Or, snapper or octopus or grain fed scotch fillet.

While there's not so too many obvious nods to The Sixties on these Gazebo plates, there is one that yells out, Wood fired 150g Camembert - pickles, chutney, house flat bread ($28). (They did baked cheese back then.) Share that instead of dessert. Or eat it on its own, to accompany the booze. And on Wednesday nights, with the Piano Sessions. Here's looking at you kid.
