Mouthfuls On Macleay

Wind up Darlinghurst Road & into Macleay Street Potts Point, for great food and even better people-watching! The pigeons are audacious and so is the dress-sense, but you might be surprised to find some of Potts Point’s bartenders and baristas remarkably down-to-earth.

Coffee, Tea & Me

This tiny coffee-hut counts David Wenham as one of its regulars. Only eight or so people can fit inside, but inexplicably, a dozen will always be trying. The bagels, and baked goods are as good as might be expected, but the coffee is marvellous. The Joe and The Juice franchise has set down a new café opposite, but it doesn’t appear to be convincing locals to jump ship - yet.

Douce France

A charming pattiserie and hideaway in Potts Point, Douce France is perennially buzzing but never overflowing. (I’ve found that, even on the weekend, there’s a seat for me). Local Francophilians congregate here on their cheat-day for éclairs so divine they stay for two more. Amongst the paralysis of choice in the way of eateries on Darlinghurst Road & Macleay St, Douce France is a warm, unpretentious space where a good French meal or desert can be had.

Zinc Café

The staff aren’t particularly friendly, but the people-watching is fantastic. It won’t even be noon yet when an old woman decked out in comically impractical costume jewellery has ordered a Bloody Mary and asked for a water-bowl for her duo of schnauzers. People of all persuasions gather here for a slice of cake and good coffee. There is lots of light and tables are out in the fresh air. There’s nowhere better to lounge out in the sun during summer.

Marcelle

Myriad plant-based options for the vegan can be enjoyed at Marcelle, which is situated overlooking the fountain of Fitzroy Gardens. The pancakes with coconut cream and fruit taste as good as they look, and won’t set you back an unreasonable amount. Come here for tasty breakfasts under $15. The staff here are particularly polite, and will remember you.

Fountain Bar & Eatery

While the pretty chairs make for a charming scene, the fountain itself is a little noisy. Move inside for a wine and meal during the day, and you’ll find the staff very pleasant, and the food consistently good. Beware if you come here with the afternoon off, one rosé usually leads to seven.
