New Romance MCA Café Korean Pop Up

The black soft bun of Bossam bang with pork belly, seamjang, kimchi mayo and pickles might be the New Romance headliner but there are also a lot of other equally delicious offerings on the MCA Café new pop up menu.

Fresh Catering has collaborated with Chefs Tai Kyu and David Ralph of Restaurant Kim for this exciting new menu and the café will be featuring some of their signature dishes. The MCA pop up coincides with the MCA's New Romance: art and the post human exhibition.

Under $20 three new pop up dishes supplement the traditional MCA Café fare in Small Bites & Boards To Share. Alongside the Bossam bang ($18) that part of the menu offers five tasty King prawn, ginger and shallot dumplings ($16) and a generous large bowl of Korean chicken & sweetcorn soup with sour cream and leek ash ($14).

Perhaps our next to best described as Korean Super Bowl ($22) is a splendidly aligned balance of flavours and textures, sweet and sour, with an unctuous sweet sticky pulled pork that is complemented by equal heroes of kimchee, 4 grain rice, sea greens and seeds. This complete dish brings everything you want for a day at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In mains we went nuts (pardon the pun) for Restaurant Kim's TKFC Korean fried chicken, nuts & chilli BBQ sauce ($26) which (if you haven't yet tasted this) is one of the best versions around. Then add the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge MCA Café views to this David Ralph and Tai Kyu signature and you are on your way to heaven.

Yet even better is our Korean New Romance top pick Oritang ($26) luscious transluscent sweet potato noodles, hearty shredded duck swimming with spring onions in a deep rich broth in a big generous bowl. This was so good we wanted seconds.

Finishing the Korean choices are a couple of sweet things peeking through the selection of cakes and cookies. The Matcha green tea cake with lemon cream ($6) is geared for average tastes as it is not as strong as some of the other matcha dessert offerings around town. Best stick to the Korean doughnuts that are sweetly endowed with crushed peanuts if sweet is your café and coffee go to.

As for us? We enjoyed carafes of The Adelaide Hills, The Pawn Wine Co. 'El Desperado Rose' which seemed the right thing to do over a long leisurely lunch on such a sunny Sydney winter's day. Not only was the pretty pink in theme for New Romance, the rose was a marvellous match that lifted the Korean spices and chilli.

MCA Café’s New Romance Korean Menu will feature at the café until September 4th. Open 7 days a week with late night Thursday’s, the café is fully licensed and features an all day dining menu. The MCA Café is located on level four of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and offers uninterrupted views across Sydney Harbour and is open to the public as well as Museum visitors.
