Life begins on Friday Nights at Woolloomooloo's newest small bar - Peekaboo, a tiny hideaway bar down on Bourke Street is a cool mix of sultry, fun and celluloid cool. With New Orleans aspirations Peekaboo is exposed sandstone walls with incandescent lightbulbs imbuing the space with that warm welcome glow and a slick timber bar where the flurry of bartending action takes place. Signature to the venue, on a large painted mural with callouts to cinema greats - there's Betty Boop, James Dean, Marilyn, Hepburn and Bogart. Drinking at Peekaboo, you're never really alone with this classic cast looking down on you.
Scouting out the venue: there are three parts to the Boo - its front room with seats along one side with space round the front for the DJ to spin his deck and rock the venue; there's the long bar where barflies hang out under the watchful gaze of Hepburn and soak up the atmosphere and attention at Peekaboo; a side room, their secret bizarre room exists, what used to a bedroom in this old style Victorian terrace is now home to booths you can cosy up with your boo and snuggle time away in. From the solo drink, to couple and groups, the Boo caters.
Classic cocktails have the Peekaboo twist feature. There's a Nawlins Sour, Piscoboo, Nucky's Manhattan and more. Their 'Boops Ride' cocktail is a tasty summery blend of fresh watermelon juice, cognac and Cointreau served Martini Style. It goes down easy. 'Chesire' Gin, Aperol, honey water with Mint and Grapefruit Granita is an icey cool down cocktail which leaves us grinning. A good winelist of local and international wines, craftbeers feature on their drinks menu. On the food front, the kitchen dishes up soft tacos with a selection of chicken, pork and vegetarian options. There's also blue cheese filled peppers all wrapped up in prosciutto. It's a yummy treat. Charcuterie Boards with a delicious selection of cured meats, cheeses and olives are also available.
