Cocktails, canapés, beers and live tunes - that's what we were told to expect at this week's launch of Smokey's Cabin, upstairs at Surly's American BBQ, Burgers and Beers in Surry Hills.
Surly's is the latest offering from the Parlour Group, whose other venues include Riley St Garage and The Print Room in Paddington. The main Surly's venue opened last year, taking over the old space held by Table for 20 and Sticky bar. Smokey's Cabin is the newly launched den upstairs.
Climbing the stairs at the back of the venue, we're greeted by a spacious top floor site that continues with the Americana theme of downstairs, with rows of diner style booths, some tall wooden bar tables, a well stocked bar, walls stripped back to the bricks and a stage space for those promised tunes. Two big shuffleboard tables in the centre are popular with punters who fancy some competitive play after a couple of drinks and snacks
Friendly bar staff whip up their recommended cocktail - a Maker's Mark bourbon number with lemon juice, bitters, dry ginger ale and mint. It's fresh and tasty, and there are many being sipped by other guests all through the venue.
Spicy chicken wings and pulled pork sliders are the food highlights of the evening, and with the latter it's definitely recommended to experiment with the array of sauces on your table - our pick is the Diemen's hot sauce, got to love the zing of those Tasmanian peppers.
The rest of the regular Surly's menu is available upstairs too, including their signature American BBQ plates that you can design yourself from the various meat and side options available. Also popular are the Surly burgers (with Surly Sauce) and there is a vegetarian burger option with a black bean and sweet potato patty.
Up on stage The Sweet Jelly Rolls kept up a lively Americana soundtrack through the night, ending the launch evening with a few hot little tracks that have a good few guests up on their feet for a dance.
