Aussie Beer Returns Home

"The story of how James Squire became Australia’s first brewer is a cracking yarn."

James Squire (1754 – 1822) was a first fleet convict transported to Australia and is credited with the first successful cultivation of hops in Australia around the start of the 19th century. First officially brewing beer in Australia in 1790; James later founded Australia's first commercial brewery making beer using barley and hops in 1798.

"He led a life that would make any man envious. It was a journey full of thievery, dishonesty and above all flavour. Indeed, James Squire had an appetite to taste it all. From being a convict on the First Fleet, Squire turned his life around and rose to become one of the governor’s guards, the father of 11 children and, perhaps most significantly, the colony’s first and most sought-after brewer. An impressive resume by anyone’s standards, he lived enough life for several men."

Nearly as incredible, or maybe more so, is the story of The Wreck Preservation Ale, a '220 year old beer'.

The world’s oldest surviving beer – made new! The James Squire brewers have resurrected, then tamed a 220-year-old shipwreck yeast, crafting it into a dark, malty, spicy & stormy brew that’s truly a once in a life time taste. The style is inspired by the beers that were being transported on the Sydney Cove; porters, small ales and IPAs.

The Squires Landing brings beer history to its best vantage, returning a microbrewery to Sydney Cove, and giving what could be the best balcony beer garden views in the world, if not only in Sydney.

The venue’s Head Brewer, Peter Merrington, will be permanently based onsite crafting exclusive small-batch brews, and delivering James Squire Limited Releases and its nine core range beers and ciders. You can get the [220 year old] The Wreck here.

“We’ll have some of the freshest beer being served in Sydney and a range exclusive to The Squire’s Landing. We’ll also be able to honour the legend that is James Squire, at the same location where he first set foot on Australian soil almost 230 years ago,” said Peter.

The brand spanking new 2 level venue will feature loads of seafood, and innovative dishes using seasonal produce as the upstairs restaurant offering. We're head over heels smitten with Coffee Cured Duck. Head Chef Angus Harrison will be also offering hearty pub classics including burgers and steaks, on the lower level Brewhouse menu. Signature kitchen equipment includes state of the art Josper Ovens, a custom-made Manhorne BBQ Smoker, rotisserie over an iron bark coal pit and wood-fire grill fuelled by Turkish charcoal.

As Australia’s newest James Squire flagship, The Squire’s Landing is a partnership between Mantle Group Hospitality and Lion, and tells the legendary tale of James Squire, a convict on the First Fleet and Australia’s first brewer. The Squire’s Landing will be the seventh James Squire Brewhouse in Australia - complementing existing Brewhouses in Brisbane, Newcastle, Melbourne, Adelaide and
Perth.
