The Theatre Bar At The End Of The Wharf

Sydney Theatre Company was granted the home of Pier 4 of the old Hickson Road wharves by the NSW State Government back in 1985. Since then, actors who have trod the boards for that company include internationally recognised names such as Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush and Toni Collette, to name a few. It’s a world class performance company in a world class performance space. And the wharf is also home to a number of other leading performance companies, including The Sydney Dance Company and Bangarra Dance Company.

Of course, a glass or two of wine before a performance enhances a night out. Better still, the outing becomes rounded with food. So, housed on the same wharf as the performance spaces, there’s also a place to eat and drink- The Theatre Bar At The End Of The Wharf.

Casual dining at The Theatre Bar is versatile. From three in the afternoon the kitchen starts serving a range of small plates and boards. Like the theatre company, the repertoire is international and approachable with a range of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired dishes from Fried Cauliflower, Tahini Dressing, Paprika and Pan Fried Sicilian Meatballs in Tomato, Marjoram Dressing & Rocket, to a Dip Board: Baba Ganous, Hummus, Pumpkin & Coriander, Grilled Flat Bread. These smaller plates are good for sharing, and as starters, as a snack or when pieced together as a whole pre-theatre dining ensemble.

For hungrier appetites, large plates, suitable as mains, start at 5pm. Seafood is a terrific choice with dishes like Linguine with King Prawn, Tomato, Chilli, Garlic, Parsley & Pangritata, or Beer Battered Flathead & Chips with Malt Vinegar. Chips, by the way are thick cut.

They are also vegetarian options such as a Crispy Falafel Burger, Tahini, Eggplant, Coriander & Chia in a Soft Milk Bun. And for meat loves, pork belly or Wagyu beef shank.

And the order at the counter eatery also offers a finale, a couple of desserts, or a cheese board.

The Bar At The End of The Wharf doesn’t dress-up with table cloths, sits help-yourself cutlery on each table, and doesn’t take reservations (although the spacious balconies can be booked for events).

Because the views at the end of the wharf are magnificent, and in themselves world class, stretching out into Sydney harbour, gazing at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, dining is not restricted to just patrons of the theatre. It is for everyone, and the perfect place for locals or to enjoy on a Sydney visit.
