The Vanns' tour playlist

Wollongong four piece band The Vanns are in the midst of a national tour and are celebrating the release of a new music video for their single "How Was I Supposed To Know".

This track, described as the Vanns' classic formula of "impassioned, rollicking guitars meet an effervescent charm", centres essentially on the breakdown of a relationship. The music video, directed by Aden McLeod and filmed in Melbourne, takes viewers through various stages of a dinner date, wrought with emotional conflict.

Exclusively for Sydney Scoop readers, The Vanns have put together a tour playlist of some of their favourite tunes to listed to while on the road. Click on the Spotify link above and get listening, for your exclusive taste of tour life.

"Gimme All Your Love" - Alabama Shakes

As soon as this song starts it smacks you in the face then immediately caresses you. It’s rock, it’s soul, it’s got it all.

"Small Talk" - Courtney Barnett

Always had a soft spot for Courtney. The lyrics in this song are so direct and paint such a picture. The wobbly guitar compliments the vocals so well. If you’re feeling down it’s time for Small Talk to blast through your speakers.

"If You Come Around Tonight" - Oh Mercy

How is Oh Mercy not one of the biggest artists in the world? This is one of the greats off the album ‘When We Talk About Love’. It’s an emotional journey, so personal and lyrically raw and naked about losing love/missing what was.

"Lover, You Should’ve Come Over" - Jeff Buckley

What a songwriter. What a ballad

"Society" - Ainslie Wills

Her voice, the story, the guitar tone & that chorus. Yep it’s a hit

"Mother Mother" - Fat Freddys Drop

If there’s a perfect song to introduce this band this is the one. All in 9 minute epic.

"On Every Street" - Dire Straits

This song has always reminded me of home. There’s so much space and ambience in the music, it breathes so well for the vocals to tell a story. That guitar melody in the outro is so damn cool

"Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane" - Gang of Youths

What a vocal experience, simply beautiful.

"We Are The People" - Empire of the Sun

One of the most iconic songs of the 2000’s. Everyone knows it but I feel it’s a hidden treasure these days. It’s pulled out on special occasions like a fine wine.

"Outside: - Catfish and the Bottlemen

The lads know how to write a tune. This song is the last one of their previous album has left me hanging wanting more. When’s album number 3 dropping!?

"Stuck" - Wing Defence

We just wrapped up an Aus tour with Wing Defence and this song has literally been stuck in my head ever since.

"Owner of A Lonely Heart" - Yes

This song was introduced to me back when GTA Vice City came out. They’re a superband, a trademark sound of the 80’s.

"Ain’t Nobody" - Chaka Khan

The original queen of funk speaks for herself

"Iknowhowifeel" - Parcels

Groove, groove, groove. This song has so much feel. That beat ain’t going anywhere.

"I Love You, Honeybear" - Farther John Misty

So many layers of lush strings. Well crafted tune

"We Find Love" - Daniel Caesar

Bit of Frank Ocean vibes here. That vocal melody in the bridge is so great

"Scream Whole" - Methyl Ethel

Epic, just epic.

"My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" - Neil Young

You should share a jazz cigarette with your closest mates to this one.

"Wakin On A Pretty Day" - Kurt Vile

Put this on first thing in the morning, your day will be a delight.

"Something About Us" - Daft Punk

The drums and bass are locked in so tight. The layering of instruments is perfect. It’s a timeless piece of music.
