Bartender Dr Phil's Sydney Favourite Five

When we caught up with Phil Gandevia at Eau De Vie recently, he gave us a peek into his life outside the bar. Here are five things that he likes to do in Sydney in his time off.

1. Gordons Bay

A well kept and secluded secret, this beach is just a short stroll from where I grew up in Coogee. It's a great place for a picnic on a summers day, snorkelling, and even surfing a fairly intense reef break which can handle some really big swell.

It's a great place to while away a lazy afternoon.

2. Belvoir St Theatre

I really enjoy having a season subscription with these guys. They do 5pm shows on Sundays, which is great for those of us who work late nights, and there is always something interesting showing. I'm looking forward to the Glass Menagerie coming up soon.

3. Berowra Waters Inn

I took my wife here for her birthday and was blown away by the food and service here - plus the sea plane flight in over Sydney harbour was pretty spectacular. Take the chance to stay in the local area overnight for the full experience.

4. Chinese Noodle Restaurant

There are now 3 of these places around China Town, and Pyrmont, but it's the Haymarket original with the grapes on the ceiling that does consistently good dumplings and noodles. Its no fine diner, but if the spiced eggplant dumplings are on the special list, grab at least a dozen of them. Each.

5. Take a Stroll around Kings Cross

One of the most vibrant areas of Sydney, take a stroll around the Cross. The City of Sydney has an excellent walking guide with historical details which is a useful addition. Stop off for a coffee at Maeda on Llankelly place, swing past The Roosevelt for a martini or a glass of wine at Monopole. There is plenty to see and do here!

Dr Phil Gandevia is an award winning bartender who creates the experimental concoctions found at the Eau De Vie Apothecary.
