Five Ways To Eat Over The Rainbow

It is no secret that the more we learn about the food we eat, the more conscious we are about what we chose to fuel our bodies with. Goodbye to the days of coloured food dyes, and hello to a future of natural food colouring, found in our beloved fruits and vegetables aka, natures rainbow.

Mommypotamus has showcased this perfectly with exploring some natural ways to colour die eggs for Easter, check it out here >> www.mommypotamus.com/how-to-dye-easter-eggs-naturally-with-everyday-ingredients

But don’t be fooled, there is more than meets the eye. It turns out natures rainbow is not only a beauty to look at, but it comes with an array of health benefits as well. Take a look at five different colours and examples of some fruit and veg and the many nutritional benefits these natural colours exhibit.

Green

Chlorophyll, a green pigment found in our leafy and green vegetables helps the body to detox. If you’re sick of steamed broccoli, hide some along with some spinach in a smoothie! Or head over to @thedivercoogee at 250 Arden Street Coogee, who make a mouth-watering smoothie bowl.

Blue & Purple

Such as blueberries, beetroots, plums and raspberries are packed full with anthocyanin antioxidants which help protect your cells from oxidative stress. It seems Matcha blue, a super food powder is also on trend at the moment in the foodie social media world. If you’ve missed out, check out @matcha.blue on Instagram.

Orange & Yellow

Rich in Carotenoids, a compound that has vitamin A activity as well as antioxidants and can be found in such fruits as citrus and vegetables such as sweet potato and carrot. Why not make a carrot cake? A healthy one of course ;) or add a slice of lemon to your water. Or let someone make them for you at @aboutlifenm café’s in various locations throughout Sydney.

Red

Tomatoes, raspberries, red peppers, and cherries also contain carotenoids and anthocyanin pigments and are a great addition to any savoury or sweet dish. Try throwing some berries into your green smoothie for some extra kick. Or better yet, head back over to the Organic Raw Food Café in Bondi @earthtotablebondi and they can make it for you!

White

A special addition to our colourful natural food rainbow, can be found in such fruits and vegetables as apples, onions and cauliflower and are rich in anthoxanthin, which is said to help lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol. Try baking some cauliflower for some extra crunch in your salad or dip that apple into some natural peanut butter for a filling snack. I also couldn’t go past white without mention of one of my favourites, the coconut! Eat it, cook with it and put it in your hair and on your skin, its benefits are vast. And if you haven’t yet tried @cocowhip then I highly recommend it! To find a café near you, head over to cocowhip.com.au and find one of the many cafes throughout Sydney that sell it.

So, what is the moral of this colourful story? Fill your plate, colour your food, seek out cafes and Instagram inspo all with the one aim to consume the rainbow... natures rainbow!
