French Five for Bastille Day

What to eat for Bastille Day 2019 in Sydney

You don't often find the ultimate French winter dish in Sydney. The food bloggers movie took the Julia Child recipe for beef bourguignon to the masses. But as much as we love it we're not talking about that (just yet - although there is a beef cheek version on one or two of the menus that follow). L'Aligot made of three different kinds of melted cheese mixed with hot mashed potato, is a dish you won't normally find in Australia - and it is ssssssssscrumptious. However the wait is nearly over, L'Aligot from Frenchies Bistro hits Sydney for the four days 11 to 14 July, in 1 of 22 wooden chalets in the Christmas in July Village in The Rocks. To get you in the mood, snow will be falling every 10 minutes from 5pm. Yes you can have a White Christmas and celebrate Bastille Day at the same time!

Think French, and winter in Sydney means black truffles - which feature on more than one Sydney Bastille Day menu. We've been getting our local Aussie fix since the start of the season from Great Southern Truffles. (We're also stocking up on truffle yumminess such as truffle honey from them to keep us trufflified all year.)

Yet the truffles that we are most excited about this winter, are the special treat being prepared by our favourite creperie. The truffle galette is made with freshly grated black truffle, prosciutto, swiss cheese & egg, at the Four Frogs for Bastille Day. Last year, to celebrate the French national day, the Four Frogs used black truffle in their crêpe and sold out in just a few hours! This year, Chef Florian Guillemard drove down to the truffle farm, and picked 3kg ready, so his Bastille Day feast can last for four days - 11 July to 14 July. We've already booked our table at Gateway Circular Quay, but your could make your booking at the original in The Spot Randwick, at Mosman or Lane Cove >> www.fourfrogs.com.au

Four Frogs Crêperie you can get a touch of France in Sydney with the other four French crêpes and galettes Florian has specially crafted for throughout the whole month of July. Try the Snails Galette, where the snails have been slow cooked in a garlic and parsley sauce. Not French enough for you? Then try the Goats Cheese Galette, prepared with sundried tomatoes and pine nuts. And for dessert, how about the Black Forest Crêpe? For those
with a sweeter tooth, divert your journey to the Mont Blanc Crêpe. Chestnut cream is a popular and traditional dessert in France, and it's not something we see here enough. This beauty is made with chestnut cream and meringue and should be a winner.

Italian restaurant Capriccio Osteria is swapping the green, white and red flag for the French Tricolore this winter. Head Chef, Nicole Bampton is up for a culinary challenge and turning her attention to the neighbouring France. The Leichardt restaurant will host a special Bastille Day dinner Sunday 14 July from 7pm. The traditional yet innovative menu - that includes for example Beignets with blue swimmer crab, green salad & lemon vinaigrette - will feature French cuisine with a Chef Bampton twist >>  capriccio.sydney/bastille-day
