AURORA - Queendom

Stunning Norwegian songstress AURORA is back on our new-release radar with her first new track since hit debut album All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend two years ago.

The new single 'Queendom' has just dropped and we love it. It is completely in line with the catchy, upbeat, whimsical style that has had audiences so quickly come to love AURORA these past couple of years.

Of the track, the artist herself says:

"'Queendom'. A song where all that has been silent can sing, all that has been weak can fight back and all that has been suppressed can be seen. It’s a song about my own little world. My queendom. A place where I am the world, where the sun is a crown and sea waves are a gown. It’s a safe place. Small, but big enough to fit all the people in the world.”

On the surface it's an uncomplicated, innocent idea of a magical world where a young woman can be safe, content - indeed, can be a queen. The lyrics themselves are quite simple and repetitive.

It's not hard to take a step further though and wonder if beneath the lighthearted, fairytale-esque concept there is some commentary to be heard about female autonomy and equity, with this notion of a safe and happy space being depicted as other-wordly fantasy. The play on words in the chorus, "Till Queendom come" further reflects this - the unexpectedness of a 'Queendom', so in contrast with perceptions of societal structure that it is best portrayed in a fun and whimsical pop song.

AURORA captured Australian hearts when she played last year's Laneway Festival (this writer's heart included - her set was a clear highlight of Laneway Sydney 2017).

Her debut album launched and toured to great success, with hit tracks including  ‘I Went Too Far’, ‘Conqueror’ and ‘Warrior’, as well as her EP, Running With The Wolves.

AURORA’S music is full of wonder, hope and happiness, no matter what the subject matter may be. The tunes are irrefutably catchy and her vocals on point.

'Queendom' is out now through Liberator Music/Glassnote Records
