Newtown’s very own beerific brewery and taste bar, Young Henrys, has teamed up with Pingala and is about to craft Sydney’s first community solar co-operative. And because both Young Henrys and Pingala are all about the local community, you get a chance to become part of this new project and incentive to help Sydney become cleaner and greener as a community investor. So what’s with all this rhyming? Well, the brewery solar project is a bit like poetry – with its perfect blend of expressions and ideas that are not only embracing the need for renewable energy, but also encouraging a deeper connection within the community. Aside from all the extra benefits from going solar, the fact is, your beer at Young Henrys will be made by the sun - and what can be a better poetic metaphor for your solar made ale than glass filled with sunshine?
The Young Henrys sunny team is no stranger to sustainability and they encompass the Newtown hipster vibe – but hipster isn’t just about style, it’s about styling your life with more consideration towards the environment, your health and the people around you by reducing your environmental impact. So how do they help achieve this? By creating less waste – suppling glass Growlers to their ever growing community of loyal regulars and beer-lovers that can be refilled again and again, and by donating approximately one tonne of spent grain a day to a local farm to help feed cattle and livestock instead of dumping it into a landfill. So it’s little surprise that Young Henrys has become the first project for the not-for-profit team, Pingala, with the aim of creating less greenhouse gas and waste in the production of their beer.
So who are the Pingala People? They are a bunch of solar loving, everyday people from across Sydney – volunteers all – who are passionate about making a change in their community and combine their diverse skill sets to help create a greener Sydney. They’re a social bunch; you may find them at YH having a Sunday beer and they welcome you to join them. After a great beer, with great people who have great ideas, you may want to get involved in their exciting projects… Pingala always welcomes new volunteers and Energy Citizens to join their community and their occasional Sunday drinking sessions at Young Henrys, whose beer making process is all set to make history.
So while the YH team make their beer, the rooftop solar panel system at Young Henrys Brewery at 76 Wilford Street, will create electricity for the brewing process, and according to the Sydney Morning Herald, this could avoid an annual amount of around 127 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Now that’s something to drink to!
So, let’s raise a glass to the YH brewing philosophy, which is built on keeping things local and reducing their environmental impact, and say ‘cheers’ to the new partnership with the solar citizens at Pingala, which allows you and your community not only to invest in the brewery solar project, but also to invest in your local environment by helping reduce Newtown’s Carbon Footprint.
