Cooked & Co at Sans Souci is buzzing. There's a reason it's busy, mostly with locals. First up, you possibly couldn't find more helpful and friendly cafe staff. Plus, there's lots of tasty choices on the menu.
The Cooked & Co. printed menu covers all the basics, and there are plenty of them. From breakfast rolls and burgers to sandwiches, toast, muesli, the ubiquitous smashed avocado, and scrambled eggs. The add-ons include the interesting choice of a house made kimchi. That's the first clue of the creative flair we can see elsewhere at this cafe. Such as, on the big blackboard menu. It's a little more adventurous, with dishes such as mine - Poached eggs, hot smoked salmon, fresh spinach, pickled cauliflower, red onion salad & tahini yoghurt dressing. Other blackboard mains include the Malay chicken salad, and the Warm Japanese bowl. Examples such as this show the skilled marriage of various components, the flavours and textures. There's also a couple of specials scribbled on paper bags below the cake counter. A Thai chicken curry is one. Those cakes, on checking are house made, another tick.
When we order, we're immediately offered a choice of toasts, sourdough or soy linseed or rye grain, a thoughtful touch. Service is swift. Food is delivered to the table in the right places, remembering who orderered what. Although maybe that's because we ordered separately. In any regard, the food came out together, which because of the separate ordering is impressive. Coffee and other beverages are good too. Cafe bonus points for the sugar in glass, but not for the individual butter pats in plastic.
It's a lovely sprawling corner location. Order indoors at the counter, and receive your wooden spoon table number. Your table might be in that room, or around the corner, or outside on the pavement under an umbrella or the awning on the tables that meander down the street. The single unisex toilet is outside (not through the kitchen like at some cafes and restaurants) which for weary wanderers like ourselves is a bonus.
Cooked and Co advertise that "all our products are made from scratch using quality ingredients and organic produce where we can." We say the proof is in the eating! And that is scrumptious!
