Jardin St James Pop-Up

The team behind King Street's Jardin St James have just launched a pop-up venture in Potts Point, adding some of Sydney's finest baguettes to the lunch time options around Kings Cross.

Located directly under the iconic Coke sign, the French inspired business is staying true to its roots, with great coffee (supplied by boutique roasters The Little Marionette) and simple French food - baguettes with crisps and pickles and warm raclette cheese.

Owner, French expat Julien Besnard, has had a dream for many years of bringing authentic French baguettes to the people of Sydney. And this is just what he's doing at his new pop-up.

A simple three step menu awaits:

1. Pick your baguette

2. Add raclette-style hot cheese - swiss, blue, or raclette ($2-2.50)

3. Add crisps and pickles ($2)

The baguette list is printed on the wall and includes mouthwatering beasts such as La Raclette (ham, potato, cornichon, Dijon mustard, $9.50), Le Poulet (chicken breast, walnuts, creamy Dijon sauce, lettuce, $9.50), Le Cordon Bleu (chicken, ham, caramelised onion, creamy Dijon sauce, $10) and for the vegetarians, L'Italienne (mozzarella, tomato, pesto, lettuce, $9.50).

The true gem on the menu is La Pro - prosciutto, thinly sliced potato, rosemary and bechamel ($10.50). Owner Julien will inform you the only cheese for this combination is the blue - and he may well be correct. Enclosed in deliciously crispy, fresh, lightly warmed French baguette, this is a treat you won't want to share.

Crisps and pickles add some novelty as tasty sides, but the unmissable element here is the hot cheese. Very on-trend, the team are capitalising on Sydney's newfound love of raclette and dishing up oozing spoonfuls of the stuff over their baguettes. Don't skip this step.

If, like me, you've spent a hazy morning in France devouring plates of hot meat and potatoes covered in freshly melted raclette from a little grill plate, you'll peer gleefully over the counter to see Julien and his team spooning raclette cheese from the very same little pan.

Coffee is by local legend The Little Marionette, and is done well. Take the team up on their suggestions of some interesting almond milk concoctions if you're feeling adventurous, or stick to the classics.

The pop-up is currently open for daytime trading 7 days a week, from 6:30am until around 3:30pm.

They hint that there's more in store for the not too distant future - we can't wait to see what Jardin St James does next.
