Still My Favourite Bar

Four years since opening, three years (give or take a few months) since my last review, Knox Street Bar is still my Sydney favourite. It's not only everything a small bar should be, but perhaps has even blossomed as it has settled into its back street garage basement neighbourhood role.

On any given night, Knox Street Bar can have a mix of patronage. On the corner of Shepherd Street the venue offers Chippendale residents an economically priced community bar. Then there are always those in the know that come from further afield.

Cocktails are carefully crafted and the drinks of choice. The shake can be slow so as not to bruise ingredients such as mint, or can involve a popular flame, but are consistently delicious. Can't make up your mind? Best value and best fun comes from spinning the foundational cocktail wheel which assigns a cost to the wallet of only $16 a drink no matter where the wheel lands. Are you ready to take a chance?

Added to the cocktail wheel front page of the list, there are now also pages of espresso martini, negroni and classic cocktail choices.

And if cocktails are not your choice of tipple, there are many other beverages on offer: tap beers, alcoholic ginger beer, still and sparkling wines, spirits, shots.

Food has evolved. Still best bar appropriate, still served from the food truck cut out, now you'll find a range of yummy hand crafted wrapped hot dogs from the traditional Scandinavian Long Dog with home brewed pickles to Susie Spoon vegetarian kale and cauliflower, all $14 and served with a cabbage slaw side. Of course, there are fries. Four bucks on the side, or grab a great big bowl. There is only one question - whether to share or keep them all to yourself.

More good news, thankfully the opening hours have now extended to midnight Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

And then there is the entertainment.

The Oyster Club is a safe space for LGBTIQA+ and everyone to be their dressed up selves.

Late Night and Uncut vintage strip tease shows every second Friday night.

And weekdays, Knox Street Bar hosts Wednesday night Life Drawing, Wolf Comedy on the last Thursday of every month, and regular Little Fictions storytelling by writers, actors and spoken word artists.

Knox Street Bar is everything a small bar should be. Including friendly.

Booked in for the birthday celebrations of this year, we'll see you there soon. Unless, that is, you are the stay at home type, who's not up for a quiet friendly drink or a good time party!

Want more? By night the bar, by day the corner area turns into a café still serving up the scrumptious Scandidogs with a $2 daytime discount.
