Over 200 stars from the music, tv, radio, business and arts worlds collided to celebrate the red carpet official opening on Wednesday, 21 November 2018, at Sydney’s International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, of one of the most dynamic and exciting exhibitions Sydney has ever seen. This would of course be Exhibitionism: The Rolling Stones Exhibit, a lovingly created exhibition that documents the existence of this all-time, world-wide super group for the past 56 years.
Just a small sprinkling of the celebrities that walked the Rolling Stones' Exhibitionism red carpet included our Nicole Alchin (Nicky Girlstar), Richard Clapton (singer-songwriter), Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Elliott Hammond (The Delta Riggs), Jeff Duff (vocalist), Paul Field (The Cockroaches, The Wiggles), Scott Tweedie and Liv Phyland (The Loop Network 10), Phil O’Neil (Triple M), Jason Staveley (WSFM), and Glenn A. Baker (rock historian), Thea Jeanes-Cochrane (iEC Exhibitionism creator), Tony Cochrane (iEC Exhibitionism creator), Sandra Chipchase (CEO Destination NSW), Geoff Jones (CEO TEG), Tim McGregor (Managing Director TEG Live), Danny Townsend (CEO Sydney FC), David Gallop (CEO Football Federation Australia) and Richard Wilkins (Event Emcee and Nine Network Presenter).
Sydney has been granted exclusive hosting rights for Exhibitionism in Australia, hot on the heels of the global premiere in London, and US stopovers in New York City, Nashville and Las Vegas. This means that nowhere else south of the equator can you see this amazing benchmark setting display of over 500 Stones items that are 100 per cent dedicated to showcasing the achievements and history of The Rolling Stones.
It’s nothing new to report that The Rolling Stones is a rock band well known to all having been a major pop culture force since it was formed back in 1962, but what is new is that Exhibitionism is the band’s first major exhibition. Setting the benchmark in terms of the high level of memorabilia detail and scope, but also creativity, ingenuity and exacting nature displayed in the recreation of a) spaces that helped shape the band like their Edith Grove flat, b) an interactive sound mixing decks and recording studio, as well as c) a screening cinema narrated by Martin Scorsese and video experiences, and d) an immersive backstage experience leading to a 3D concert finale, it is expected people from all over – overseas as well as inter and intra state – and various walks, of life will attend.
The exhibit’s appeal goes well beyond that of Stones fans and music enthusiasts. They are definitely catered to though of course with a wealth of music memorabilia including vintage guitars, rare instruments, lyric books, backstage and touring paraphernalia, album art, photography, stage design, and personal diaries and letters. Interest will spill over from these specific sectors to the wider community including of course the fashion, film and art worlds - punters can expect to see 50 years of Stones fashion and 190 original artworks. Designers featured in the costume display include Alexander McQueen, Prada, Dior, Gucci, Hedi Simane, Ossie Clark, L’Wren Scott, Mr Fish as well as contributions from Anna Sui, John Varvatos and Tommy Hilfiger. Art notables of the likes of Andy Warhol, David Bailey, Shepard Fainey, Michael Cooper, Christian Piper, Robert Frank, and a league of others are represented in the Exhibit’s artworks.
