Twilight by Motimaro

We were asked to be in silence, then we entered the dark space. In the dawning of the light the silhouette of one entwined form emerged.

Once upon a time
When the heaven and the earth was one,
the earth, the moon, the sun,
humans, animals, trees, water and winds,
When everything was in resonance,
everything was music and dance,
weaving waves together in the universe.

I was you
Life was death
Man was woman
Inside was outside
Subject was object

Everything was circulating in harmony
with strong confrontation.

In the city, in the office, in the family,
Inside of us
The myth is still going on
Can you still listen to this dream time?

What an extraordinary performance. This poem from the program embodies it all. But not enough. You couldn't.

The performance was more like a moving sculpture than dance. Mid century spiritual Butoh evolved to its next flow of soul to form.

From the one, the two separated. At first the separation represented struggle. More than struggle angst. Then eased into interaction. Finally Motoya and Tiziana floated outside of gravity in the cosmos. Then ended kneeling facing the audience, literally, hair brushed back, and bowed.

We never saw their faces. Their long flowing black hair engulfed them. Through every movement stretching fingers, arms, legs, torsos, entwined then separated, each yin and yang of tautness and gentleness accompanied us to the dream time world.

Twilight and the duo of contemporary dance is perhaps one of the highlight performances of any of the arts I have had the honour to experience. Berlin dance duo Motimaro are not to be missed.

There are three more performances of Twilight at Old 505 Newtown. Morimato will also be performing MUT there while in Sydney, and offering classes in Butoh.
