Grouper, a.k.a. Portland, Oregon artist Liz Harris, has made a name for herself with her otherworldly studio creations. At once as delicate and steely as spiderweb, marked by endless reverb and atmospheric noise, every Grouper release is a sound world unto itself.
The latest Grouper album, the spare and beautiful 2014 Ruins, was a retreat. Recorded solo in an isolated Portuguese villa, it finds Harris's angelic voice accompanied by little more than an old upright piano, the sound of a fresh thunderstorm, and croaking frogs. Late in 2016, Grouper re-emerged with the bright and beatific single Paradise Valley.
Grouper is heading to Australia this June, and as part of a run of dates across the country she'll be stopping by Paddington's Uniting Church. There couldn't be a more fitting venue for an artist so transporting and uplifting.
