The Art of the Archibald Prize High Tea

With more colour than a Del Kathryn Barton, the creativity of Marcus Wills’ 2006 masterpiece “The Paul Juraszek monolith”, and the stunning sophistication of 2014’s winning portrait of Penelope Seidler, the Archibald inspired high tea at Sydney’s Sofitel Wentworth is the perfect appetiser to the tantalising 2015 Archibald Prize.

Running until 27 September and held in the hotel’s Soiree lounge bar, the arty high tea is served on a can of paint and a Pollack-esque slab, which is adorned with a smattering of savouries and sweets, including a miniature (edible) version of one of last year’s popular entries of snowboarding champ, Torah Bright.

Among the desserts you will find vibrant macarons, eclairs splashed with red and fluffy donuts served with apricot puree. Roast beef baguettes, classic egg sandwiches and a tart or pie of the day round out the savouries.

But it’s not all about sipping tea and nibbling on scones. Your canvas awaits! Sketch your tea companion with the pencils provided and upload your handiwork to social media for the chance to win tickets to the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ exhibition “The Greats”, which opens in November. Don’t forget to hashtag #SofitelMyArt to be in the draw.

Priced at $59 per person including a glass of Taittinger champagne or $65 per person with complimentary sparkling for the duration of the high tea, your afternoon delight also includes a ticket to 2015’s Archibald Prize exhibition. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is just a short stroll away (cut through the Domain behind the State Library) and the perfect place to while away the hours.

The Sofitel is also offering an Archibald experience and stay in the luxurious comfort of a guest room with elegant French styling from $345 per room per night. Enjoy the choice of a wide assortment of breakfast dishes in the Garden Court restaurant before a day of city action or relaxation.
