Thursday Nights at Cornerstone

Thursday nights at Cornerstone Bar & Food is the start of a long weekend of Carriageworks eating and drinking and now even more.

From 5pm until late Cornerstone present pre-theatre post-theatre or you-don't-even-need-to-go-to-the-theatre nightly nuptials of stylish but affordable (please let's not say cheap eats because they are yummy eats at any price) share plates and large plates, wine and beer, and yes oh yes cocktails.

Perhaps, if you know us, the booze is the place to start. And for us, cocktails are the Cornerstone beverage prize. It's a collaborative cocktail list at Cornerstone, with the team all having a bit of input, and signatures like High Calibre ($16) Bulleit Bourbon, Rosso Antico, lemon and Maraschino cherry that will please even those more partial to other beverages than bourbon. Our best bet, while blood orange is in season, is the elegant Blood Simple ($18) Herradura Bianco, Cherry Brandy, Blood Orange, Chilli Infused Honey which yes, does have a bit of bite but nothing too bad tempered. The chilli just sits in the middle without kicking the shit out of you. The blood orange balances it. Yep, give this one a go as a starter. Scorsese is a special with wonderful organic rum. At any good bar such as Cornerstone classic cocktails are always available. We made ours martinis, gin, stirred and very dirty. And the way to finish is with another signature, the Cornerstone version of espresso martini. They call it Marrionette Martini and it's another that at just sixteen bucks leaves you plenty of coin in your pocket.

To eat there are nibbles from Smoked almonds & peanuts, or Spiced corn kernels (each $6), share plates such as Seared haloumi, grilled asparagus, cherry tomato & rocket ($15) through to large plates such as Southern fried chicken with coleslaw and chipotle aioli ($17) or Grilled Nomads chorizo with grits, roast cherry tomato and rocket.

Thursday nights check out the blackboard for the roast. We had chook and pumpkin and wilted spinach. It was delicious and generous and just an unbelievable twelve bucks.

From this week, Thursday nights get even better when Marty Doyle aka DJ “Dusty Fingers” will hit the decks from 6:30pm till 10:30pm, mixing it up with soul, rock, funk and all your favourite beats. Vinyl @Cornerstone is on during August, and just for three weeks.
