Pedro Almodóvar's latest, direct from its premiere at Cannes, is a far quieter and more autumnal film than is typical of the director, but still maintains his eye for colour and playful sense of humour. Telling a slowly unfolding story of grief and guilt through flashback, Julieta is one of the director's most directly and nakedly emotional films, adapted from the short stories of Alice Munro. The titular character is a reserved and stoic woman (played by Adrana Ugarte) who is holding back a dark, emotional secret that slowly reveals itself throughout the film.
