Yasujiro Ozu's 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story is not only considered possibly the greatest Japanese film ever made, but one of the world's all-time best movies. The slow-moving and low key film reveals itself slowly and deliberately, turning a simple story of an ageing couple's trip to Tokyo to visit their adult children into something awe-inspiringly beautiful and touching.
Featuring career-best performances from Ozu regulars Chishu Ryu and the radiant, incredible Setsuko Hara, as well as Ozu's most eloquent use of filmic language this may actually be a perfect film. The 2016 Sydney Film Festival is proudly showing a brand new restoration of Tokyo Story that is sure to enrapture viewers both familiar and unfamiliar.
Even if you've already seen it, Tokyo Story is always worth seeing again.
