‘HELLO. MY NAME IS INIGO MONTOYA. YOU KILLED MY FATHER. PREPARE TO DIE.’

Narrated by Peter Falk to his grandson (Fred Savage pre-Wonder Years), The Princess Bride is a centuries old tale, handed down the family line. In a country named Florin, Buttercup (Robin Wright) lives on a farm tended to by Westley (Cary Elwes). To prove himself worthy of her love, Westley leaves to make his fortune but his ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts who never leaves anyone alive. Meanwhile, Buttercup is set to marry the loathsome Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) but is kidnapped by a giant (Andre the…), fencer Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) and bossman Vizzini (Wallace Shawn). What follows includes great betrayal, great romance and great Rodents of Unusual Size.

WHY SHOULD YOU SEE THIS FILM?

Presented here in new 2k DCP, this is up there with The Labyrinth in terms of 80’s fantasy movies that are compulsory viewing. Based on William Goldman’s beloved 1973 novel, The Princess Bride smartly mixes adventure, action, comedy and fantasy with a whipsmart script that manages to slyly poke fun of all those genres at the same time. Plus the cameos are non-stop – look out for Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Christopher Guest and Peter Cook.
