Smoking Gringos will join ‘Tamale Queen’ Rosa Cienfuegos and other Mexican/Latin American Chefs at the Day of the Dead festival being held for the first time at Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter. Great news for birria taco lovers who can’t make it out to Smoking Gringos’ Blacktown restaurant!

This 4 and 5 November 2023, The Entertainment Quarter will come alive with Latin American bands, street art installations, food stalls and lucha libre wrestling, to celebrate Mexico’s traditional holiday Dia de los Muertos ‘Day of the Dead’.

Entry is free to the two-day fiesta which aims to increase public awareness of the Mexican community and introduce a classic cultural food and beverage offering to the festival market, in celebration of the traditional holiday honouring loved ones and bringing family together.

So grab your closest amigos and come celebrate in true Mexican style!

The line-up of the best of Sydney’s authentic Mexican and Latin American chefs so far is Smoking Gringos, “Tamale Queen” Rosa Cienfuegos, Carbon and Baja Seafood.

Patron Tequila will have a pop-up bar serving margaritas and palomas and hosting a masterclass on tequila, as well as Mexican beers and soft drinks from presenting sponsor Jarritos.

No Dia de los Muertos would be complete without the traditional ofrendas (offering altar) display of marigold flowers, candles, sugar skulls, and cherished mementos. A tattoo station by visiting Mexican Australian artist, Skullavera, will showcase designs inspired by the calaveras and other traditional symbols, and a sacred Cacao Ceremony hosted by Frido Cacao will allow revellers to reflect and connect with their inner self.

A live mariachi band, local DJs, plus the smooth tunes of urban ‘Latino Australiano’ artist Carlos C Major, will keep the party alive for the two-day celebration as well as folkloric dance performances. The kids can enjoy face painting, crafts, and other fun games that will teach them about the vibrant culture of Mexico.

Tickets to Dia de los Muertos Fiesta are free and available via Eventbrite: Día de los Muertos Fiesta
