A Tiffin is a multi-tiered Indian lunch canister. You might have had one if you've travelled in India, or like me if you haven't, you might have a romantic affinity for them through a film - such as The Lunchbox.
Well, we've found them right in the heart of our vibrant city, at The Spice Room, Circular Quay. Tiffins are an appropriate addition to the menu of this Indian restaurant as it snuggles on Phillip Street looking out at the Circular Quay trains passing by - that's how the lunch boxes get delivered in India, by train.
"In Mumbai the Dabbawallas deliver Lunch Boxes called Tiffins to white collared workers all over the vast city. Taking inspiration from them The Spice Room Tiffin serves a quick pre-set lunch in a 2 tier or 3 tier Tiffin box."
We love the Tiffin train names: Mumbai (V.T.) Tiffin - butter chicken, aromatic rice and mini naan in a 2 tier Tiffin box, City Circle Tiffin - Andhra Curry Leaf Chicken, Kadhai aiLamb, Basmati rice and mini naan in a 3 tier Tiffin box, Town Hall Tiffin - Chicken tikka pieces, garden salad, mint raita and naan bread in a 2 tier Tiffin box, and the vegetarian Circular Quay Tiffin - Paneer Tikka Masal, Lentil Dhal Tarka, aromatic rice and mini naan in a 3 tier Tiffin box.
And while we love the train names for the lunch boxes, even more importantly we love the food: the curries are deliciously generous, tender and flavoursome, the rice is fluffy and separated and the naan is buttery good. And with each well under thirty bucks the Tiffins are not only a quick eat but a cheap one, seven lunches a week.
The Spice Room is also open for dinner with a more extensive menu that includes snacks inspired by Indian Street Food. We'll be back.
