Africola Rock ’n’ Rola - Young Henrys

Over the weekend Young Henrys Brewing Company launched a new limited release collaboration with our good mate Chef Duncan Welgemoed and his Adelaide restaurant Africola.

When Young Henrys co-owner Oscar McMahon met Welgemoed, he knew they were kindred spirits. The larger than life Welgemoed has been throwing himself into the Adelaide food scene with all the subtlety of an angry Springbok since arriving from South Africa in 2010. Oscar liked his punk rock approach to the culinary arts and when it came time to sign onto the Adelaide Beer and BBQ Festival - he knew they had to cook something up together.

Young Henrys rising star brewer Hamish MacKenzie was tasked with capturing the relationship in a unique combination of hops, malt and water and bringing the collaboration to life. The conversation took an interesting turn when we discovered Welgemoed loves the beer cocktail Michelada. Throwing clay ideas onto his 6000 litre potting wheel full of wort, MacKenzie spun the traits of this big, bold South African chef into a spicy, bold and citric, Young Henrys IPA.

"Young Henrys newest limited release beer — the Africola Rock ’n’ Rola —is a rich, dark amber brew with all the hallmarks of a stone cold classic. From a citrus hop explosion intro on the nose, to a fruity flavor sliding its chorus across your tongue, to an outro of alcoholic warmth, which hits you like a punch from velvet gloved fist," Young Henrys co-owner Oscar McMahon said on the collaboration.

“Duncan has the madness of mind and the rock n roll spirit that we love to be around. He's also a bloody good cook who doesn't mind the occasional one or two. After we met him we knew we'd have to do a beer together sometime…”

Sydney don't despair. While Africola Rock ‘N’ Rola launched at Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival it will be available for a limited time on taps around the country from this week.
