Sydney's inaugural one-act play festival NO: INTERMISSION launched in Chippendale this week presented by Theatre Travels

The first two plays Queenslander and Albumen played at the Chippen Street Theatre through the week, and the next two weeks will see six more short theatre works feature at Chippen St Theatre in Chippendale and KXT Popupstairs at the Kings Cross Hotel. NO:INTERMISSION features emerging and established artists across all disciplines from around the world, with several works making their Australian or World premieres during the festival.

If the opening two plays are anything to go by, its going to be a fabulous fortnight of talent.

Queenslander by Tremayne Gordon, the opening act of the festival, was a remarkably compact play depicting the tension and connection when five young people move into a sharehouse together after surviving devastating flooding in Queensland. A play that "investigates human connection in the face of adversity", it was moving, relatable, emotive and witty. The cast were excellent and the performance tight; of note the moments of interwoven text shared flawlessly between the five.

Albumen by Mishka Lavigne was a harrowing exploration of relationships, interdependence, manipulation, depression and self worth. Once-talented art student Jessa donates blood every 56 days in an attempt to bring meaning to her life, which she otherwise spends working in an office and modelling for her eerily influential former photography teacher Danielle. At the donor centre she meets Lucas with whom she embarks on a turbulent relationship repeatedly challenged by Jessa's personal struggles and self doubt.

"The sensation of having veered off the path. Of being asleep with your eyes wide open. Of being erased and slowly drained of colour. Of being a copy of a copy of a copy… Of being left to wander out in the cold. The sensation of your flaws being exposed, bit by bit, in a photo-bath."

NO:INTERMISSION continues for two more weeks in Chippendale and Kings Cross.

It's a wonderful celebration of local and emerging talent. Highly recommended.
